All Library books are due on Thursday. If the students have all their library books returned or paid for by Friday May 13th we will have rootbeer floats on Friday.

Our field trip is tomorrow. Please remember to
1. Send a lunch with your child 2. Clothing appropriate for the weather 3. Remind your child about appropriate behavior We are supposed to get some rain at some point tomorrow. I have told the students they may want to pack extra shoes and socks incase it gets a little soggy. If you would like to follow the bus to Shawnees town that would be great or you can meet us at Old Shawnee Town 1150 W 67th St. Shawnee, KS 66203. If you have any questions you can e-mail me. We will leave at 9:00. I know we have had some beautiful days this past month, but is is still cold in the morning. Please send you child with a coat and a jacket. This weekend is going to be another beautiful one, but the week is going to be cold. Outside at recess we have no wind block which makes it even colder than what you might think it is.
I did not send homework this past Wednesday. I had to leave before math and did not want the sub to have to deal with the tearing out process. When homework does come home please make sure your child is completing the assignment and turning it in. Most of the assignments are not long and will not take too much time. I have had to make a lot of copies for missing homework this past week. If your child's throat is not feeling well or they have a cough you are more than welcome to send in cough drops. They will keep them in their pencil box during the day. Don't forget the school carnival is this weekend from 1-4 here in the Elementary school. Thank you for sending in a ton of first aid supplies. Thank you for all the gifts you gave me before the break. They all came in very handy. This Week: We have been busy in the classroom writing about our New Year's Resolutions, 3 digit addition, and geography. Upcoming Skills ELA *identifying reflexive pronouns and use them correctly *Fairy Tale unit to cover * central message, lesson, or moral of story * compare/contrast 2 or more versions of a story * recount/retell story Writing- * we will be moving on to animal research. * define research and how it is different than other types of writing * Research a topic with others * work with others to write about a research topic * answer questions using information recalled or gathered Math We will continue to work on 3 digit addition until about January 26th. The students seem to be doing ok. They just need to remember to regroup the ones in the correct place. Geography- We are working on * what is a map *continents and oceans (names and location only) * Where they are city, state, country, continent *Finding Wichita, Kansas City, Topeka, and Tonganoxie on the Kansas map *Finding and labeling Kansas, Rocky Mountains, Missouri River, and the Golf of Mexico on a map of North America. Please remember to send a heavy coat, hat, and gloves to school every day. The mornings tend to be are very cold. Homework- I will be sending more homework with your child this semester. My expectation is that all work is completed by the student and returned with in two days. If they are not returned with in two days they will be given half credit. I understand things happen just let me know and we can extend the due date by 1 day, as long as it is not a common occurrence. I will send Homework on Monday's and Wednesdays which means it will be due on Wednesday and Friday. This will usually be a math homework page that should not take more than 15 minutes. Reading Bag Reading bags will be coming home every day. Please read the book with your child. Spelling- Please make sure you are working on the spelling words with your child. You can send your child with chapstick to keep in their pencil box. Also, if your child needs to have cough drops that is fine they will keep them in their pencil box as well. ELA- We are still plugging away at reading groups. Please remember to read at home with your child. Also, when the reading bags are sent home please make sure they get returned the next day. We will be finishing up verbs and will then move back to adjectives. After grading several papers I felt they all needed a little more time with adjectives. Writing- The students are excited to write a letter to Santa. What the don't know is they are working on writing letters and using commas. We will also be working on other short writing projects throughout the next 2 1/2 weeks. Math- Place value is the current skill we are working on. Students are learning that there is more than one way to show a number. We have currently worked on numbers with base 10 blocks. Students will also work on numbers in written and expanded form. Social Studies- We are still working on economy. Students have discussed needs and wants, goods and services, and producers and consumers so far in Social Studies. We will also discuss supply and demand, world trade, saving, spending, borrowing, giving, and the role of banks. I plan on wrapping this unit up by Wednesday. For the last week and a half students will put what the know into action through the Santa Store Economics. Tomorrow, TES students will have the opportunity to attend a presentation of You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown, put on by the THS drama department. This will be a good opportunity to expose our students to different extracurricular activities in which they may one day participate. Kindergarten-2nd will board the busses at 8:30 am and return to school at approximately 10:30am. If you have any question please call the office at 913-416-1480 ELA- We have been learning about nouns and verbs. We will continue to work on verbs this week and move on to adjectives next week. Keep reading at home and remember to return the reading bags the next day. Spelling. Please practice with your child. You can practice with your child in the car. Choose 3 spelling words, when your child is in the car have them spell the three chosen words. This weeks words are Unit 13 Synonyms every found still between name awesome amazing quick fast polite kind noisy loud synonym similar Math- We are working on regrouping when subtracting. This has proven a little harder to grasp for some. I will be sending homework on Friday. It will be due by Wednesday. Science- We will be finishing up with Natural Resources up this week. The test will be on Wednesday. We will be switching to Social Studies and studying economics. Please, Please, Please, Please, Please, Please, Please, Please, Please, Please Make sure your student has at least a jacket for the day. The mornings tend to be a little cold. Also, colder weather means chapped lips. Your child can bring in a tube of chapstick to keep in their crayon box. Have a great day- How about those Royals. Just goes to show it is not over until it is over. What a great chance it is to talk to your child about giving it your all until the end. Every time the Royals play I remind my children that is why you never give up and you never think you have won the game until the game has completed.

Our provider of substitutes services indicated there are simply not enough substitute teachers available to provide adequate coverage and supervision of students. Also, the high number of expected student absences on Tuesday would make it difficult for our schools to provide continuity with the instructional program." Fingers crossed, students will pick this concept up as well as they did with the 2 Digit addition. Thursday or Friday should be when the fun times will begin. By then we should be digging in deep of when to borrow and how to borrow. Science- We are still on the Natural Resources unit. We will be learning about landforms and the water cycle. We should finish up with this unit and test on Friday the 13th. We will then move on to Social Studies learning about economics. ELA- We will be learning about main idea and words with double vowels and consonents this week. Please remember to have your child read their books from their reading bags. I am going to be sending home reading bags on Tuesday's and Thursday's. If your child has a chapter book they will only need to reread/read the chapter assigned. After talking with other teachers, I will be sending home reading bags every night. Please make sure your child reads their books. If they have a lot of books in their bags just have them chose 3 to read. If they have chapter books, they are to read only the chapter they have read in the classroom. We are also going over how to give a summary for books they have read. Math- We are still on regrouping. The students are getting really good with regrouping. Science- There will be a test tomorrow over the states of matter. Students have a study guide we completed in class they can look over tonight at home. We will be starting Natural Resources on Thursday. Writing- We have finished writing about Halloween costumes and will move on to writing about monsters.
