All about Mrs. Barnes
Welcome to 2nd grade
I am looking forward to a great year working with the students. This is my fifth year teaching second grade and tenth year teaching overall. I started in Tonganoxie teaching Title I math in grades 1-4. Then I moved to kindergarten where I spent two years teaching. For the past four years I have been in second grade.
My educational background would include graduating from Tonganoxie High School. I then went on to attend Washburn University to gain my Bachelor’s in education, with an endorsement in early childhood. I earned my master’s degree from Pittsburgh State University with an endorsement in English as a second language. I have also completed a program for Reading Recovery training.
This year students will be learning a lot of new skills. In math students will be learning addition and subtraction with and without regrouping of numbers from two or more digits. This is a very important skill and will take up a lot of our time in math. We will also learn about time to five minutes, money, and shapes attributes. In English Language Arts we will continue with reading groups and working on phonics. During English Language Arts students we will be doing a lot of write during Writing Workshop. This will be a time students will be given a mini lesson on writing and will then complete a piece of writing. Science students will be learning about plants and animals, engineering, natural resources, and simple machines During Social Studies students will be learning about government, economics, history and geography.
Who is Mrs. Barnes? My husband and I have 3 children Ashtin, Trent, and Quintin. Ashtin will be in eleventh grade this year. Trent will be in ninth grade. Quintin will be in fifth grade. As a family we love to watch Sporting Kansas City play and WIN. My two older children love to play sports and their favorite is futbul (soccer). We are still a little unsure about Quintin. His favorite thing to do right now is pester his sister and brother!!!
I am really looking forward to a great year in second grade
